Amy Mortion points out today that Vernon Jones donated to the GEORGIA REPUBLICAN PARTY in 2001. According to the FEC site, it appears he made two donations on January 12, 2001 in the amount 1232.04. A commenter states this money was for tickets to the Presidential Inaugural Ball. To which I say, “And?” For the sake of argument, let’s say that’s true.. Jones states that he voted for Bush because Gore was “not in touch” and “wrote off the South and Georgia.” It’s one thing to vote for the other guy, it’s another thing to pay a couple grand to dance at his damn inaugural ball.

“I guess I just don’t really like the “party loyalist” stuff.
Sometimes, you’ve got to do what YOU think is right, even if it’s voting for someone in a different party.
Jones apparently thought backing Bush was right, and hey, AT THE TIME, many others thought the same thing.
Sorry, just like any other constituency within the Democratic Party, throwing the South “under the bus” is just as bad as what some of the others on here fuss about 🙂
At least to me anyway.”
Yeah, man, setting up secret prisons, slashing habeus corpus, bombing an innocent country where half the population is under the age of 16…Vernon is a genius to just go with his gut BECAUSE HE THOUGHT BUSH WAS RIGHT. Maybe Jesus told him?

IRE,
Interesting point on the GOP and the South. West coast states are pretty well treated as safe by the Democrats, so we never got much love either (than of course to see our values at the party core).
-
JM,
Thanks. I think I get it now.

RD:
A couple things.
First and foremost, don’t ever think Vernyboy was doing anything out of principle. Dude was voting for Bush because he is an opportunist, plain and simple. Sh*t I wouldn’t be surprised if dude actually didn’t vote for Bush and is just saying he did. Oh well, to borrow a phrase, my proof is that Vernon Jones knows. And I don’t believe him ever. Anyways.
Second, I don’t think the DNP should ever ignore a region, I think it is their job to focus on the South and the Midwest where we perform poorly.
As for candidates in national elections, they need to target where they can win (and a lot of times with the Dems its not the south, the same way Republicans ignore the Northeast). So not campaigning in the Dixie I’m kind of cool with. Its not going to the Ds so why campaign there at the cost of a 50/50 state with a ton of EC Votes? Elections are about winning. And don’t think that the GOP was campaigning in the South. To them the only thing this region is good for is money. So I would say it is the Republicans throwing the South under a bus.

Yeah, thinking about it, I thought I needed to reintroduce the crowd to another useful tool:

Eric Johnson. Now I’m not going to leave breadcrumbs for anyone to follow on to the campaign reports & donation filings. No trash talk, just the facts. Cheers, JMP

Are we talking about Kerry not competing in the South as being “throwing the South under the bus”? If it was unwinnable and a waste of resources, some can try to make it Kerry’s problem, but whose problem is it really?
I remember when Gore didn’t carry Tennessee, apparently because he took it for granted and didn’t campaign there. I remember thinking how selfish that was of those Tennessee voters; It wasn’t enough that they were going to have a homey in the WH, they wanted him to spend money and time at home too, despite having lived in, campaigned in, and represented Tennessee for his whole life, and his father before him too! Who threw who under the bus?

Vernon Jones abandoned Democrats when we were on the bubble, when we still had a democrat for governor and a democrat in the White House. It’s not just Kerry. It’s Gore, you know the guy who really actually did win the White House until he didn’t? Vernon supported Republicans in their bubble year. He was part of the coalition that swept democrats out of power nationally and in Georgia. Now, I’m not naive enough to think that he had some sort of special power or influence-he might think that about himself, but I don’t-but he openly supported and gave money to the same Republican machine that unleashed those horrible attacks on Max, created the Rat ad and made Bush president.
-
I am not sure why we take Vernon’s explanation at face value when we know they are bs. The President has no idea who the CEO of DeKalb County is, even in Vernon’s own mind. He just wanted to run for state wide office and saw that only Republicans and those viewed as “conservative” were capable of winning, so he attempted to align himself with that. That’s it and that’s all. And the alignment with Obama is not about skin color, it’s about winning. Obama can win Georgia while the other people can’t. And maybe that’s about skin color, but I don’t think that’s the point you were making.

It really is oversimplifying things to say Kerry just wrote off the South. While that is true, it would have been dumb to try and change that. Kerry was always -20 points and no Yankee would have ever changed that (then again he lost, so his strategy wasn’t that great). With Obama, he saw kind of competitive numbers with low AA registration and a huge COH and the South becomes doable. And quite easily the Party can win without the South. Put Ohio in our column in 04 and the South is irrelevant. This year put CO and MO in our tally and who cares about the South.
As much as I love the South, I really can’t stand when people say Dixie is the key for electoral success.

Long v. short term, though, Rural.
Georgia would have been a waste of resources in the Kerry time. Your “out of the mainstream” comment immediately shows that it would have taken a lot of effort to shake Georgians into viewing Kerry seriously.
In terms of a campaign, looking at Georgia is a waste of money (even though it may force your opponent to take his own eyes off the ball).
In terms of a long-term strategy, yes, the Democrats should be looking toward the South and spending money here to remind it of all the good work liberals have done.
Although, I would argue that the Democrats could completely ignore the South if they capture the Kerry states, got a couple of Mountain West states and lockdown the upper Midwest (Obama’s base of power, wonderfully enough).
That’s more of an exercise in theoreticals, though. If we want a movement, we need everyone.

Dude, if you’re going to talk trash, talk trash. I’m really beginning to hate insider references. It’s not like you’re earning yourself plausible deniability or anything.

M_Combest,
I think the major beef with Kerry other than being out of the mainstream in our state, is that he basically ignored the South.
I’m not an Obama fan, but I do have to give them credit for focusing on some southern states. They understand that the party cannot win with just New York, Massachusetts, and California.

Dum Dee Dumm Dumb.
Sad but true. ‘Dem’s’ giving to Repugs. Repug’s giving to Dems.
Wait a min. What’s that? Check out one bald character from the coast with the initials EJ. You’ll be surprised.
So it’s official. Ga’s.Crazy!
But that don’t mean we have to like it either! Cheers, J.M. Prince

There must be an echo in here- I have been saying this , passing around this stuff since January…
So Vernon thinks Al Gore and John Kerry are out of touch with mainstream GA – and Obama is not, if these two are too liberal, no one claims Obama is a conservative. cmon Vernon, we are no stupid, its all about the fact you share his skin color.

The staffer’s response at Amy’s site is priceless. Too bad Jimmy doesn’t care about the race, otherwise Vernyboy would be done.
-
Dude, I’ve been saying this forever.
The answer the dude gave me however was that, its important as an executive to work with both Rs and Ds to get money.
Why the eff didn’t he stay with that answer at least. I don’t buy it but its a much better line than his BS.
