BfD Holiday Gift Guide
With the chilly weather upon us and festive decor showing up everywhere I am reminded that the season of madness is upon us. With the shaky economy and bank accounts depleted from campaign season I offer some ideas for holiday gift giving.
I find the most meaningful gifts to give and receive are those made by the giver. Whether it’s a jar of homemade BBQ sauce; a patchwork placemat and napkin set; a tote bag printed with photos of a vacation or campaign; or a handmade card, all carry the most sentiment. Little is as joyful as using something day to day that was made by a friend or family member. These gifts are truly priceless.
If you’re not the crafty type (though I believe everyone can be) then handmade gifts by others are the next best thing. There are dozens of local galleries and craft fairs that offer inexpensive, unique, and charming gift ideas for everyone on your list. If you’re looking for a one-stop chance to pick up some handmade gifts consider attending December’s Kraftwork on December 4th. Kraftwork is an “Indie Craft Market” held monthly. The December event should offer a vast array of holiday gifts and decorations.
If you, like me, have folks on your list that don’t really need anything but you’d like to recognize them during the holiday season, then consider a contribution to a favorite charity or organization in the recipients name. I’m particularly fond of Heifer International. Seriously, who wouldn’t adore knowing they helped buy a Water Buffalo for a Filipino village; a Basket of Hope for a struggling farmer; or Honeybees for a poor family. Or, hey go for the gusto with the Gift Ark (or share thereof). What’s your favorite charity or organization this season? Leave the links in comments.
Now, if luxury is your bag, I can help with that too. I was recently at the Chanel Counter at Macy’s and discovered the best luxury bargain of the year – five 1/8 ounce bottles of Chanel Parfum (the real stuff) for what 1/4 ounce of one fragrance would cost you. It’s a great way to give that special woman the opportunity to discover which Chanel fragrance suits her. Unfortunately, Macy’s online is fresh out of this product, but you can still find it at Nordstrom.com. It’s a great deal so shop early. They are bound to sell out! Cashmere lined leather gloves are always a great gift too – I still have my pair that was a holiday gift in 1995! Then of course, there is Tiffany. How about a Snowman bauble? Or perhaps the more affordable, Tiffany Playing Card set. There is plenty for the gentlemen in your life at Tiffany, too. Perhaps a compass?
If it’s food you want to give you can do no better than Zingerman’s Mail Order! Not only is the food terrific, but Zingerman’s has a terrific record of helping in the community. Their effort, Food Gatherers, collects and distributes food from restaurants, caterers, schools and grocery stores to alleviate hunger in Washtenaw County, Michigan. So, you can get the mail order bread named best by Esquire and help feed the hungry! If a sweet treat is more your style, you can’t miss with Dragonfly Cakes delightful petit fours.
Whatever your style, budget, or time allows, make sure the gifts you give are meaningful and personal. It’s worth the effort.
