AG’s Race Goes Enviromental

Ken Hodges pledges to go after BP if they f’ up our coastline.

“As Georgia’s Attorney General, I will ensure that BP is held accountable, to clean up all the damage affecting the Georgia coast through oversight of our office. They have pledged to pay for any and all clean up and I will enforce this promise if Georgia’s coasts become affected.”

“Corporate irresponsibility has a cost and the destruction of our state’s coasts will not be tolerated. I would like to call on state leadership to create a task force in preparation should the oil hit our shoreline similar to what they have done with the tri-state water planning. Nothing should be more important than preserving our state.”

This is a serious piece of propaganda. From what I can see HR 338 is not “offshore drilling in a resolution,” and actually mentions a number of alternatives, like nuclear power, natural gas, and minerals. It’s also a nonbinding resolution, mentions nothing about caps, and really is benign. What was Rep. Teilhet supposed to do, vote against it?

Oh, and anybody want to make a statement about the fact that Ken Hodges donated to Saxby 3 separate times over a 7 year span?

Not that I am against all off shore drilling, but no one can deny that it was just plain irresponsible for our government to push off shore drilling when they either a) didn’t know what they were voting for and just flowing with the political tide; or b) knew that there were inadequate safety precautions and clean up procedures in place and voted for it anyhow. It is not like people don’t realize that an oil spill is a possibility when drilling for oil.

My biggest concern is getting over the monetary cap for economic damages after the clean-up, which is currently at 75 million.

Eh. I would have voted for HR 338 (full text), so I’m not gonna ding Teilhet much for that.

Thank you Ken Hodges. I am glad to see one of the candidates for AG is taking this matter seriously. State Rep Rob Teilheit (also running for AG) voted for off-shore drilling in 2009. On top of that, Teilheit has accepted money and meals from big oil lobby firms. When this problem arrives in GA, we need someone who will protect Georgians interests, not those of BP or other oil companies that are reckless and profit driven.
