Pro-Life, Pro-Death.

GRTL didn’t endorse Handel because she supports the three exceptions (life of the mother, rape and incest).  No big shocker.  What is interesting is her reason for refusing to sign their pledge.

GRTL asks candidates to sign a pledge affirming their belief “in the Personhood of all human beings from fertilization to natural death and the attendant need for a Personhood Amendment to our state Constitution.”

Handel did not sign the pledge because the reference to “natural death” conflicts with her support for the death penalty, she said.

I always wonder why pro-life conservatives, who are usually distrustful of the government and complain about their ineptitude, are completely at ease with that same government killing its citizens.  By the way, the Georgia Innocence Project, has exonerated five men in the last eight years of their existence.

One response to “Pro-Life, Pro-Death.”

Seriously confused as her thin resume. The 1st comment up over @ the OnlineAthens link says this:

“The nonsense about the death penalty is similarly disingenuous. No right-to-life organization to my knowledge has ever interpreted “natural death” to exclude the death penalty, for obvious reasons. The “until natural death” provision is meant to bar things like euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. I believe that Ms. Handel knows this full well.”

Further, someone found this gem over at the (National) NRTL site that denies any such conflict:
    http://www.nrlc.org/Federal/ICPA/ICPAlettertoreps.html

I’ll quote in part from that: “This bill does not reflect any point of view on the desirability or appropriateness of imposing capital punishment on persons convicted of premeditated murder or other grave crimes — an issue on which the National Right to Life Committee takes no position. Nor does this bill have anything to do with other bills that deal with DNA evidence or other issues pertaining to the actual guilt of a person who has been convicted of a capital crime”.

In short, there’s never been any conflict here. They’re fine with capital punishment. Always have been. They take no position on one of the most ancient legal & moral positions of humanity. Their words come down to ‘when in Rome, do as the Romans do’. As we know, not wholly Christian according to many interpretations. Not now, not then. JMP
