Evidence that Deal’s popularity is plummeting began popping up around Macon today in the form of Isakson/Deal yard signs, with Johnny on top, of course.
I don’t know who paid for them. (Not every political dollar can be spent on materials advertising for BOTH a federal candidate and a state-level candidate.) But, I do know what they mean: Isakson is popular, especially with the Republican base, while Deal is tanking.
One of cardinal rules of politics is that you don’t hitch your campaign to anyone else’s wagon, lest you go on a trip you did not plan. News about Deal’s financial issues has the candidate is a tailspin. This move is obviously intended as an antidote for those troubles. As more and more Republicans express displeasure with Deal, I don’t think it will work, but his willingness to be yoked to a sinking ship indicates that Isakson must feel quite confident in his own chances of re-election. We’ll see.
