So, about those “Write-In’s” I keep hearing about…
As most of you are aware, Georgia has the most restrictive ballot access laws in the country. Don’t believe me, ask anyone in the Libertarian Party of Georgia or Mary Norwood.
What most folks may not realize, this includes “write-in” candidates. Did you know you must be a “official and eligible” candidate to be a write in. I suppose counting up those Mikey Mouse votes got to be oh so tiresome. Seriously, write ins are kind of tricky legal water. However, that’s not to say we don’t have candidates with the spheres to try it.
Up in the 11th Congressional District is a man running as a write-in against Phil Gingrey, his name is Jeff Anderson. While he’s not a “official” candidate he is encouraging folks to write his name in against Gingrey. I’ve spoken to Jeff on several occasions about his challenges both with party structure and legal. He’s a decent sort and heck he’s been willing to see this whole outsider candidate process through. Unlike some others, he’s not taken his toys and gone.
Since no Democrat qualified, it’s certainly an option for some might want to take advantage of.
Down in Clayton County, we have two women who rilly rilly want to work at the Gold Dome. For reasons that escape me, Gail Buckner has mounted a write campaign for House Rep in district 76. As you may recall she was elected as State Senator (44) in 2008 after having given up her House seat of 8 terms to run for SOS in 2006. Having lost her bid again for SOS this July in the Democratic primary, she’s now challenging Democrat Mike Glanton.
To complicate matters, on the Senate side in the same general neck of the woods Carlotta Harrell is the write in candidate for SS44, Gail Buckers old seat. Got that? I guess Gail realized she couldn’t run for her old Senate seat and a plan was hatched.
Oy.
Feel free to write in all the folks you like if it makes you happy! We’ve had at least two folks from this blog get votes-Page Gleason and Ed Hula. I was recently alerted that my name was written in once for 6th Congressional against Tom Price. I’d be thrilled to serve if elected!
