ATLANTA — The first ever LGBT MothUp, modeled after the standing room only MothUpstorytelling events at Manuel’s Tavern, premieres Monday May 16th at 7:30 pm at Manuel’s.
A one of a kind event, “Speaking Truth to Power: Out in the Open” headlines lgbt icons who will testify about their experiences of being out and being open and empowered.
“Out in the Open” is sponsored by Touching Up Our Roots: Georgia’s LGBT History Project Initiative, by the Mondo Homo Alternative Queer Festival, and by the Atlanta MothUp group.
“Out” will feature local veterans of the Stonewall Uprising, who will share how Stonewall changed their lives forever, Willis Bivins and Mary Louise Covington.
Also featured is Winston Johnson who will share how he enlisted Coretta Scott King into actively supporting lgbt rights. Living legend Diamond Lil will attest to surviving being out in scary Savannah in the 1960s, while Atlanta Pride co-founder Berl Boykin will reveal President Jimmy Carter’s reply when gay activists asked him to back gay rights – in 1971, when Carter was still governor of Georgia.
Mondo Homo Alternative Queer Festival is a Southeastern celebration of lgbt arts, music, and culture that is the keynote event for Atlanta’s lgbt community over the Memorial Day Weekend, May 26-29th. Mondo Homo especially sings the praises of lgbt pioneers who have made queer culture and queer community thrive. The Atlanta MothUp is an affiliate of the New York based MothUp storytelling organization, which encourages storytelling and storytellers from every walk of life. Atlanta MothUp is co-sponsoring the first ever LGBT MothUp, in an effort to expand and diversify storytelling for all.
