I weep for the next generation..

icon_down.gifJeopardy is hosting Teen Jeopardy this week and I’d like to recount the last two night’s final Jeopardy questions. Yesterday: This State’s official name has a diacritical mark in it. No one got it right. It’s Hawai’i. One person answered Massachusetts and spelled it wrong! Today: C. Familiaris is a type of animal that can range from a 2 pound Mexican variety to over 200 pounds. Two kids got it right. It’s a dog. One girl answered cat. A cat?!

And these teens are our best and brightest? I mean, it’s not like these questions were reserved for intellectual giants.

In the screen shot in the post, one of the windows is “Wikipedia: Dog Agility”, I wouldn’t mess with him.

    Benson,

A 200lb pet cat? Seriously? Also, the other two teens guessed correctly.

Also, here’s another Wikipedia article that may interest you. But really, Wikipedia?

I hate to depart from my usual intellectual elitism, but I actually think “cat” is a reasonable answer if you don’t happen to know what species a dog is (it’s canis lupus familiaris, incidentally, so the question is bogus anyway). Familiaris = “maybe some kind of pet”, and if you’re not a pet person, you might not have a clue how big cats can get or whether there’s a two-pound Mexican variety, or what the two-pound Mexican dog is. Now, the other people who missed the question, who KNOWS what they said, but don’t hate on the girl who guessed “cat”.

    Also, Wikipedia says it’s “Hawaii”.

Dude, the Government is run by Freemasons who are all part of the secret cabal of Skull and Bones. Need I say more?

ALSO, the US Government has covered up the fact that Bigfoot exists!!!

Right, but which are you gonna trust, the government of the United States of America, or the government of Hawaii?

    Neither.

The US Government is covering up the fact that extraterrestrials live among us and the State of Hawaii is covering up the fact that Obama was born in Mecca.

Either way, they dumb the questions on TV down quite a bit to compensate for stage jitters, audience self-esteem, and so forth.

If you attempt to take the test in the near future, I can assure you that it is still as hard as fuck.

The ’78 Hawaiian Constitutional Convention did two things: 1) It made Hawaiian an official state language and 2) It made the okina (that’s the mark between the two i’s) official for Hawaiian names, including Hawai’i, Ni’ihau and Kaua’i.

And yes, I did live in Hawai’i for a brief period of time.

The Hawaii question is bogus anyway.

You can see the Hawaii section of the US Code, and there’s no diacritical mark to be found.
