South Cackalacky

Thanks to Sara and Catherine, here’s what we’ve learned:

South Carolina’s system is similar to Georgia’s, in that you can only vote in one primary.  In order for Republicans to have voted for Alvin Greene, they would’ve foregone voting in their hotly contested primary for Governor.

In 2010, there were 424,893 ballots cast for Republicans; 197,380 for Democrats.

In 2008, there were 280,861 ballots cast for Republicans; 147,287 for Democrats.

In 2006, there were 247,281 ballots cast for Republicans; 138,343 for Democrats.*

* All numbers from SC State Election Commission.

What else?  The qualifying fee was $10,400.  He has a political science degree from South Carolina and was an intelligence specialist in the Air Force.  Crazy theories abound!  Was he a Republican plant?  Did someone rig the election to prove a point about voting security?  Is Alvin Greene a classically trained actor, who is only giving bad interviews for shits-n-giggles?  Or.. are South Carolinians just that dumb?

Progressives in SC? NC, I’ve met ’em. They’re there & active. SC? Less so. But listen to Clyburn, he should know, all too well.

BTW: A mash up of the Greene interviews, such that they are here:

But it’s not like the story is not getting press:

    And progressives have noticed:

(I trust folks can cut & paste here). JMP

Well whatever is going on over there, the progressive message does not appear to be getting through.

No. Something systemic & very strange is going on. All over SC, TPM picks it up. Watch Clyburn!

Dumb is dumb, they had their reasons to vote for ‘ole Strom too. (And Helms recall). But this? Is another kettle of fish. JMP

I vote for SC voter=dumb.. hell they elected Strom Thurmond like a hundred and fifty times, the closet case Lindsey Graham, Stanford, and Hayley.. yeah, where are all the theories for that?

OK. So between 06 and 08 there was a 12% increase in Republican ballots cast, and a 6% increase in Dem ballots.
Between 08 and 08 the increases were 34% for Republicans and 25% for Dems.

As much as I would like to see someone risk a felony conviction to show the vulnerability of those machines (and they use a poor model of machine over there), I don’t think this is it. At least these numbers don’t look weird.

I can’t explain the filing fee though. Or the fact that Vic Rawl won 80% of the absentee ballots. That might mean that something bad happened to him in the last week of the campaign, but I can’t find anything like that. There also appears to be too many ballots or too few ballots. Or both.

I guess my question is, if they come back and reverse and say it was a clerical error, how much of a shitstorm would it cause?
