Thanks to Sara and Catherine, here’s what we’ve learned:
South Carolina’s system is similar to Georgia’s, in that you can only vote in one primary. In order for Republicans to have voted for Alvin Greene, they would’ve foregone voting in their hotly contested primary for Governor.
In 2010, there were 424,893 ballots cast for Republicans; 197,380 for Democrats.
In 2008, there were 280,861 ballots cast for Republicans; 147,287 for Democrats.
In 2006, there were 247,281 ballots cast for Republicans; 138,343 for Democrats.*

What else? The qualifying fee was $10,400. He has a political science degree from South Carolina and was an intelligence specialist in the Air Force. Crazy theories abound! Was he a Republican plant? Did someone rig the election to prove a point about voting security? Is Alvin Greene a classically trained actor, who is only giving bad interviews for shits-n-giggles? Or.. are South Carolinians just that dumb?
